Welcome to the Bettering Humanity discussion!Think life is perfect. Think Again!Humanity around the world is suffering on mass from a lack of proper education, health systemsand just a general lack of awareness! I know what your thinking. This is quite unacceptable.Think you have a potential "miracle" solution?Post it here and help better humanity!
* Issues:
- A lack of responsibility among institutions (ie. York U/ TA Union disregard students in strike)
"Nothing happens until something moves" - Albert Einstein
- Child education not considered priority in foreign countries by government institutions (ie. Only 5% of most third world countries budget devoted to child education)
Chances are they are too busy trying to survive. Survival comes first, education hopefully comes second, but leaders are too busy lining their pockets. You have to live before you can learn.
- Misinformed/ over-entertained consumers buy products without always questioning their source or safety (ie. lead in toys, fluoride in drinking water)
"Narrator: A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one." - Fight Club
- People are unable to dissect truthful information or relevant points from the plethora of debate that rages on controversial topics. Oftentimes, people make opinions based on faulty information, and make choices based on their opinions, which has a negative impact. For example, the events in Gaza from December 2008 to January 2009, and certianly long before, have incited vociferous debate on the issue of Palestinian statehood and Israeli policies. Often, the information that a person may receive is tainted with racist or nationalistic viewpoints, which skew the truth to varying degrees, which can be evidently confusing.
Another example: shark fining in the Galapagos is a serious issue, and I'm afraid not too many people know about its repercussions. To put it simple, sharks are being killed for soup texture; kill the sharks, kill the ecosystem, kill humanity! Clearly, lack of awareness is the cause of this horrible industry. http://www.adventure-life.com/articles/galapagos-update-3.php
Solutions:
In order to better humanity, people will need to sacrifice. That means that we would have to focus not on ourselves, but on others. Of course there are people now who are sacrificing to make the world a better place, by for example donating their time to educate others. We all know and heard a billion times that even little steps make a difference. So, perhaps if everyone at least donated some of their time to volunteer, we would be in a better place then than we are today.
The problem is also that many of us are selfish, and often expect things in return. A world issue's teacher once told me that we are only truly giving or helping when we do not expect anything in return, and that is one of the hardest things to achieve.

If they can do it, what's our excuse?
